This Monday, April 14th is our next Ass in Chair Collective Meetup!

You can find all the details and links for the whole Spring slate of meetups HERE in this post.

I only grabbed a screenshot after some people had to head out and I’m gesturing about something or other — but yay! Asses in Chairs!

This past Monday was a delight! Folks were writing letters to the editor, free writing, editing larger projects, and doing small things to break through mental blocks around their creative work. And we did it together.

One participant said:

“I’m writing something that could have public repercussions in my community— I know I’m saying what I need to say, but I feel braver writing it with you all.”

Holy crap 🥹.

There was also this gem:

“i dont want to be caught in the apocalypse with no fat pockets"

You had to be there. So don’t miss the next one!

Our meetup on Monday, April 14th is for paid subscribers. It’s because this time is valuable. Our time to organize and keep it moving, sure, but also your time to commit to what you want to create.

About investing in your creative work, Erinn says: “I learned this one the hard way. I 100% assumed I would “just do” my writing on my own, without any support. I believed I’d “get around to” prioritizing artmaking even though I had obligations like rent, and keeping a job that would pay said rent. It took way too long to realize that was wishful thinking.

I needed community, and I needed to invest resources (a little money, a little time) in my creativity, the way you water a garden. I needed to prioritize my creative work the way I prioritized the rent: it needed its own line item. And you know what? When I got serious and went through my budget, there were plenty of dumb things in there that I wanted less than I wanted to be writing my novel. So I put *them* on pause, and shifted the money I was dumping into them into a studio space, into accountability groups, into this Substack. I experimented until I found what helped me slowly grind my way out of the worst of my Long Pause.”

So here’s the pitch: $5 a month (LESS if you choose a yearly subscription) gets you 4-5 hours of community time with the Ass in Chair Collective— a creative coffee shop, if you will— where we’ll cheer you on and support your creative life. That’s way less of an investment than going to an *actual* coffee shop every week. And that small investment in yourself can make a big difference.

You can try it and quit, you can use it for a season to help you through a specific project, you can be a lifer and show up doggedly every week. We love it all.

Every third Monday of the month will be an open Ass in Chair session, meaning anyone can sign up for free and the link will go out to all free and paid subscribers. Join us in whatever way works for you, and remember: your work is valuable. It’s worth investing in.

If you’d like to join us Monday the 14th (and every week), you just need to be subscribed to ONE of our newsletters:

I like to say the quiet part loud. Making space to talk about being creative, being stuck, and what to do about it. Creativity isn't science, it's magic.
