Hi, friends! If you’re new to Be Where You Are, I’m a writer and writing teacher speaking into the void about mindfulness, creativity, motherhood, aging & other things. I’m the author of THE FALLS. These days, I’m at work on my first nonfiction book and teaching for the Madwomen in the Attic. Thank you for being here. ✨✨
This spring, and I started up 🪑The Ass in Chair Collective.🪑 What the hell is that? you may be asking.
Well, apparently, Dorothy Parker said, “Writing is the art of applying the ass to the seat.”
The Ass in Chair Collective is a chill, supportive virtual creative meet-up via Zoom to help us get our asses into our chairs and make time for our creative work. We meet on Mondays at 12 pm EST for one hour, so you can squeeze it into a coffee break or a lunch during the week, or, you know, hide in your bathroom with your laptop while small humans are yelling for you (my whole summer writing plan).
The concept is simple: we get together as creative people, say hello, set an intention/goal in the chat, then each of us work on our own thing. Together. Then, we share out and go on our merry way, with the spark lit for our week, riding the wave of how good it feels to hold the thread and keep going with our creative projects. If you can only come for part of it, that’s fine. A little bit is better than none at all. And PS: Creative projects are defined broadly—we’ve got a lot of writers, and a bunch of gardeners, visual artists, scholars, and crafters. Whatever your creative thing is, we’re here for it.
This Monday, June 9th at 12 EST is our next Ass in Chair Collective Meetup!
You can find all the details and links for the whole Spring slate of meetups HERE in this post.
Last week, we had our first Guest Host, , and it was incredible. Nancy brought her usual verve and realness to talking about how we might untangle ourselves from any “stuck-ness” we run into with our work. She shared a brilliant prompt about locating our stuck-ness in our bodies and reflecting on trying something new, perhaps something physical, to move forward. We discussed the idea of being “art monsters” and committing “the little savageries” necessary to finishing our work, and left feeling connected and like, hey, we showed up and did a thing.
Once you register for the paid sessions (in the post at this link), you’ll receive an email an hour before the meet-up with the link, so you don’t have to dig for it in your inbox.
Below is the link for the free meet-up this month on June 16th 🎉🎉 It’s our first solstice celebration including SWAG (newly minted Ass in Chair stickers!!) & paid subscription giveaways and a celebration of what we’re proud of from this spring in our creative work. Register at the link below and bring a friend or two!
As always, reply to this email to reach me with any questions! Can’t wait to kick off our week together 🙌🏽💥
