essayist & poet Noha Beshir on writing despite the chaos of life, the power of her Islamic meditation and mindfulness practices, and just starting without overthinking it ✨
This is such a treat! Thank you for sharing this conversation, Noha and Emily. I've been a fan of Noha's writing since close to the beginning of my Substack time, and I love hearing her talk about mindfulness from a Muslim perspective. I'm a big fan of diversity in contemplative practices and I learned a lot from reading this.
I'm so glad to hear this, Maia! Thank you for reading & for sharing this. I learned a lot from what Noha shared, too, and I feel like it also opened up a dozen new questions for me to explore.
Enjoyed this collaboration, and I'm reassured to remember that, ultimately, mindfulness is very individualized. Noha, your newer awareness that you'd been practicing mindful presence for longer than you realized, and the associated drop in mental chaos gives me hope that some day I'll get there, too. :)
Thanks for this, Elizabeth! And I also loved what Noha shared about realizing she'd been practicing mindfulness longer than she realized. So empowering!
Love this, thank you Emily for the interview and Noha for the insights! I also have a million phone notes but mine are sooo disorganized, mixed in with sprawling to-do lists and reminders…. I think it would all make a great collage and hope I will dive in for the writing nuggets :) Of course there are also the voice recorder notes that are my bedside and bath relief…. Love also hearing how your prayers and thikr clear your mind! Thanks for this share.
I'm so glad this resonated, Anne-Marie! Agreed on the inspiration from Noha's practices. I've also got a million notes all over the place—I love your idea of making a collage of it all.

You're the best, Maia! I learn so much about mindfulness from our little chats too...
