Welcome to Be Where You Are. Today, I’m sharing a workshop that I recorded for paid subscribers, who make it possible for me to keep this work going. Thank you.🩵

This workshop is part one of a two-part series. Save the date for part two, which will be a live generative writing and discussion workshop on zoom on Sun, March 29th from 11am-12 pm EST. Subscribe to make sure you don’t miss the link to register for that workshop (coming soon!) ✨

from The Collected Poems of Lucille Clifton 1965-2010 (BOA Editions, 2012)

This workshop explores the relationship between our attention and our writing practices. It comes out of my own experience of grappling with this complicated relationship in my own writing life, rather than some expert stance. Over the last few years, I’ve been reading and thinking a lot about how other poets, writers, and artists relate to their attention in their creative practices, and reflecting on how my own writing practices are shaped by the quality of my attention (or lack thereof).

Liana Finck is my hero

This workshop explores the role that attention plays in our creative practices by sharing wisdom from poets, writers, and artists who have grappled with the same questions over time, including Lucille Clifton, Aracelis Girmay, Jenny Odell, Mark Wunderlich, Lucy Alford, and Cody Cook-Parrot. I’ll guide you through writing reflective exercises that will help you explore how your relationship with your attention impacts your own creative practice, and I’ll offer some of my favorite exercises for you to try on your own from Linda Gregg, Mia Ayumi Malhotra, and Lynda Barry.

It’s about an hour long, which includes some time for writing exercises. I hope this serves you where you are with your own writing practice, and I’d really love to hear what resonates and what you take from it.

If you enjoy it, I hope you’ll come write with me in the live follow-up workshop on Sun, March 29th from 11am-12 pm EST!✨
